Who Is God

God –the Creator

Gen 1:1  In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

It is just stated as fact that “In the beginning God”. There is no where, why, or what for, just the fact that there was God and that He was the creator of all things that we know, the heavens and the earth.

As we look at His creation we must marvel at the perfection and the complexisity of it all.

Every Human, every animal, every plant, all have different DNA. If a computer worked this out at 10 per second it would take about 200 years. On top of that you have the design of all things, designed in such a way that there would be a total ecological balance, to make the earth totally self sustainable on an automatic program. There is balance between animal life converting oxygen to carbon dioxide and plant life converting carbon dioxide back to oxygen, and other similar things. The food supply chain where animals live off each other.

The lion kills a zebra and eats, then the jackals move in and scrape the bones followed by the hyena that eats the bones, and then the vulture comes to see what it can finish off, and all the different insects coming to get there fill as well.

God made the earth perfect, as He can only create perfection, and with it all the natural laws and systems that would be needed for it to operate.

God is given different names and these names show what He is and His character.

Elohim – translated God – is used wherever the creative power or omnipotence is implied, Elohim is God the creator.

Jehovah – translated Lord – is used when God comes to help man, His creation. Jehovah is the covenant God. The name Jehovah comes from the verb “to be” and contains past present and future tense and means  “He who was, He who is and He who is to come “ or the eternal God.

When Moses asked His name the answer given was “I am who I am” the present tense of the verb to be.

The name Jehovah is often compounded with other names and these show the character of God.

Jehovah Jireh – God will see (to it) or sometimes taken as “provide”

In Gen 22 we have the account of Abraham and Isaac going to make a sacrifice to God.

God has asked Abraham to sacrifice his son, the son that God gave to him. Abraham believed God and trusted God and went to do as God asked. At the last moment God stopped him and showed him an alternative, a ram close by caught in the thicket.

So Abraham named the place Jehovah Jireh (Jehovah will see to it, or God will provide). As we look to the future from this we see that God saw to it by providing His only Son, Jesus, as a sacrifice not only for Abraham but for all mankind.

Jehovah Rophe – God who heals ( mends, makes whole)     Heal     Exodus 15:22-26

Exo 15:22 So Moses brought Israel from the Red sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water.
Exo 15:23 And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore the name of it was called Marah.
Exo 15:24 And the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink?
Exo 15:25 And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them,
Exo 15:26 And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.

The people murmured against God because of the lack of water and the water that was available was bitter.

God showed Moses how to make the water sweet by throwing a tree into it. Today there is a product called Floccotan that is used by the water purification works to improve the water by making all the impurities sink to the bottom. Floccotan is made from the extract of tree bark.

God then gave the people the option of having a sweet life by following His commandments and statutes and that He would keep away the diseases that had come upon the Egyptians.

The disease or plagues that came on the Egyptians were because of their worship of false gods; each plague attacked and defeated a different god.

God was telling the people that if they followed him totally that He would make and keep them whole spiritually, morally and physically.

God heals the root core of man and not just the physical effects. Eighty percent of sickness is caused by stress, and stress is caused by sin, trying to do the things that are beyond our capabilities, in time as well as action. If we listen to the voice of God, do what is right in His sight and keep His commandments the stress in our lives will disappear and most of the physical expression of the stress will disappear with it.

Jas 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Jas 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
Jas 4:9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.
Jas 4:10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

Jehovah Nissi                     God Our Banner                               Exodus 17:15

Exo 17:8 Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.
Exo 17:9 And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.
Exo 17:10 So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
Exo 17:11 And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.
Exo 17:12 But Moses’ hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.
Exo 17:13 And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.
Exo 17:14 And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.
Exo 17:15 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi:

The rod that Moses held up, called the rod of God was the same one that he had at the time of the burning bush, used as he shepherded the sheep. It was turned into a serpent and back again. It was used in bringing about the ten plagues. It was used to part the red sea and also to strike the rock to bring forth water. The rod had a long history in being used by God and therefore made a good representation of God. If we hold God up before us we will go onto victory. If we keep our eyes on God we will never fail, it is only when we turn away that we start to lose.

Jehovah M’Kaddesh      God the Sanctifier, make clean.                  Lev 20:7,8

Lev 20:1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
Lev 20:2 Again, thou shalt say to the children of Israel, Whosoever he be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn in Israel, that giveth any of his seed unto Molech; he shall surely be put to death: the people of the land shall stone him with stones.
Lev 20:3 And I will set my face against that man, and will cut him off from among his people; because he hath given of his seed unto Molech, to defile my sanctuary, and to profane my holy name.
Lev 20:4 And if the people of the land do any ways hide their eyes from the man, when he giveth of his seed unto Molech, and kill him not:
Lev 20:5 Then I will set my face against that man, and against his family, and will cut him off, and all that go a whoring after him, to commit whoredom with Molech, from among their people.
Lev 20:6 And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people.
Lev 20:7 Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the LORD your God.
Lev 20:8 And ye shall keep my statutes, and do them: I am the LORD which sanctify you.

God is saying, do not play with other gods, only be holy unto Him.

Molech was the chief god of the ammonites.

There are many things in our lives that become Gods to us, possessions, ideas, images, people, they become more important to us than God. These things can never sanctify and make us able to enter into the presence of God; they can do nothing for us other than to lead us away from God. We must remember “there is only one God”.

To sanctify is to separate or to set apart. When we are sanctified we are set apart to be one with God.

Jehovah Shalom                God is Peace ( makes us safe)                         Judges 6:24

Jdg 6:12 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.
Jdg 6:13 And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.
Jdg 6:14 And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?
Jdg 6:15 And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.
Jdg 6:16 And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.
Jdg 6:17 And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign that thou talkest with me.
Jdg 6:18 Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and set it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thou come again.
Jdg 6:19 And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.
Jdg 6:20 And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.
Jdg 6:21 Then the angel of the LORD put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the LORD departed out of his sight.
Jdg 6:22 And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the LORD, Gideon said, Alas, O Lord GOD! for because I have seen an angel of the LORD face to face.
Jdg 6:23 And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.
Jdg 6:24 Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovahshalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

God is peace.

The peace of God passes all understanding. To live with God we must live in peace and safety. As we look to God he makes us safe and gives us the peace that we need.

If we do not have peace we tend to live in stress and as stated earlier, stress causes eighty per cent of all sickness. Stress weakens the body and brings imperfection into it. God calls us in Hebrews to go onto perfection.

Heb 6:1  Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection;

Jehovah Tsidkenu          God our Righteousness (equity or equal judgement.)           Jer 23:5,6

Jer 23:1 Woe be unto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! saith the LORD.
Jer 23:2 Therefore thus saith the LORD God of Israel against the pastors that feed my people; Ye have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them: behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings, saith the LORD.
Jer 23:3 And I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all countries whither I have driven them, and will bring them again to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase.
Jer 23:4 And I will set up shepherds over them which shall feed them: and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall they be lacking, saith the LORD.
Jer 23:5 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.
Jer 23:6 In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Righteousness is also equity, which means that all will be judged equally by the same law and with the same justice. God judges everybody the same He is totally impartial and completely fair. No person gets special treatment.

His grace does not affect His judgement as His grace is to bring us to repentance so that we can be judged.

He has only one way and that is the right way.

There are two kinds of righteousness, the righteousness of man and the righteousness of God, the righteousness of God holds us to a much higher level

In the Old Testament an offering was made to get back into God’s righteousness, but now we can regain righteousness through the offering of Jesus.

Php_3:9  And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:
