Praise and Thanksgiving

 

Psa 22:3  But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.

God lives within the praises of His people. Praise lifts uip the people as well as lifting up God.

Psa 50:23  Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God.

When we praise God we are glorifying Him and He rewards us for it.

1Pe 2:9  But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

We are thankful for what He has done for us and we show this in our praise towards Him. Praise shows Joy and joy uplifts our spirit.

What is praise?

How do we praise?.

If we look at the Hebrew words that are translated praise we see that they have other aspects to them.

Barak    To Bless: to declare blessed: to kneel

Psa 72:15  And he shall live, and to him shall be given of the gold of Sheba: prayer also shall be made for him continually; and daily shall he be praised.

Halal      To boast: to be clear of sound: to shine: to be clamouresly foolish:

Psa 22:22 I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.
Psa 22:23 Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel.

Psa 150:1 Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power.
Psa 150:2 Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness.
Psa 150:3 Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.
Psa 150:4 Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.
Psa 150:5 Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.
Psa 150:6 Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.

Yadah   To stretch or throw out ones hands: to confess:

Psa 9:1 I will praise thee, O LORD, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvellous works.
Psa 9:2 I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High.

Psa 107:15  Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

Shabach              To praise: to glorify: to address in a loud tone: to give glory to:

Psa 63:3 Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.
Psa 63:4 Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.

Tehilla   A psalm or hymn of praise:

Zamar   To sing praises: to touch strings – guitar etc.;

Psa 147:1  Praise ye the LORD: for it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely.

Praise is not only in words but we can see from the above that there can also be actions with it.

Such as raising and waving your arms,

Psa 63:4  Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.

Psa 134:2  Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and bless the LORD.

Psa 119:48  My hands also will I lift up unto thy commandments, which I have loved; and I will meditate in thy statutes.

1Ti 2:8  I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.

And even dancing as David did.

2Sa 6:14  And David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod.

When we put praise of God first we get rewarded

2Ch 20:21 And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever.
2Ch 20:22 And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.

2Ch 20:25 And when Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away the spoil of them, they found among them in abundance both riches with the dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three days in gathering of the spoil, it was so much.

Praise should flow from the fullness of our heart and fill us with joy.
